Networking Activities and associated work plan

Overall Strategy

The networking activities presented in the following sections are designed to:

  • Ensure the management of the project and the administration of the consortium.

  • Coordinate the development of policies for a sustainable European e-Infrastructure both, internally within EGI and externally, with collaborating projects and initiatives.

  • Liaise with EGI‘s user communities, including both, those organized within VRCs and those without, to collect feedback on the EGI services and the community‘s future infrastructure requirements.

Beyond the regular management of the production infrastructure there are several key issues which these networking activities will be addressing:

  • Integration of European DCIs: This activity started within EGEE-III with the formation of the European e-Infrastructures Forum with representatives from EGEE, EGI, DEISA, PRACE, GEANT and TERENA. It is pursuing an agenda of close collaboration between these infrastructures with a view to closer alignment and integration to simplify access for end-users.

  • Sustainability: The Organisational Task Force will examine how to evolve the current EGI Business Model with its membership fee. These networking activities will help establish the potential business models acceptable to the community. The constraints from this study will be used to plan enhancements to the Operational Tools (in JRA1) and the results from this implementation work in JRA1 will be used to finally recommend changes to the business model based on real accounting data.

  • Integration of new DCI Technologies: Strong links will be established with middleware projects (such as EMI and IGE) to ensure that enhancements to current DCI technologies (e.g. gLite, ARC, UNICORE and Globus) and emerging DCI technologies (e,g. Volunteer desktop Grids, Clouds, Virtualisation, etc.) are aligned to EGI‘s users and resource providers. The technical, operational and policy issues around the integration of these new technologies will be developed to ensure their smooth integration into the existing production infrastructure.
